'Brian-Brian' rivalry gives South Korean skater some competitive insight

Kim Yu-Na knows figure skating history as well as she knows how to land crisp triple-triple jump combinations and bend her body into swift and supple spins, which is to say extraordinarily well.
The South Korean teenager, who performed a mesmerizing short program Friday to separate herself from the field at the world championships, is coached by Brian Orser, the Canadian entry in the "Battle of the Brians" that was played out at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. His nemesis was U.S. champion Brian Boitano, who won the gold medal on Canadian ice on the strength of a 5-4 judges' decision in the free skate.
Kim hadn't been born when Orser and Boitano traded world championships, but Orser has told her about the competitions he lost to Boitano and the ones he won and the thin margin that often made the difference.
He did it not out of egotism but to give her insight into the mental strength she will need as she tries to unseat reigning world champion Mao Asada of Japan, her most frequent and fervent rival.
"He was a very great skater many years ago. He really helps me to focus on my own programs," Kim said Friday.
"He really knows what I feel in the competitions because of Brian-Brian, and I'm doing that now. So I think he's a very good coach for me."
Orser laughed at her name for that long-ago rivalry and chuckled again when told she had praised his coaching skills.
"Oh, good," he said, smiling. "I still have a job."
He has done his job brilliantly so far, transforming a 15-year-old girl who never smiled when she came to Toronto to seek his help into a polished and poised young woman whose smile and smooth assurance shone through in every move in her "Danse Macabre" program.
More than helping her with jumps or spins, he has taught her not to fear competition. Being pushed can topple you or make you stronger, and Kim doesn't seem the toppling sort as long as Orser is there to guide her and make her feel calm in the most nerve-racking of situations.
"It's just because knowing what I know as far as being through it," he said. "Just how I went through it at that level and the Olympics and the rivalry and the job you need to do.
"When there's somebody else in the rink that knows what you feel, who you can actually go, 'OK, he knows what I feel,' I think it's comforting."
She could scarcely have been more at home than she was on Friday, traversing the ice at Staples Center with lithe and lovely spirals and deft spins. She did get a warning for taking off on the wrong edge for her triple flip, but she still got a positive grade of execution for that jump, part of the record 76.12 points she earned.
Joannie Rochette of Canada was the only skater who didn't get a single minus and she was a solid second with 67.90 points, sandwiched between Kim and a contrite Asada, who turned a planned triple lutz into a faulty double lutz and lost points there to finish with 66.06.
Rochette was strong and forceful but lacked the luminous quality Kim brought to the ice; Asada floated and flowed to "Clair de Lune" but lost to Kim by nearly a full point on the performance/execution segment of the program components and was beaten on every other segment too.
Orser, stationed at the sideboards, jumped every jump with her and swayed his arms in time with hers. His grades of execution might have been lower, but his emotions were no less heartfelt than hers.
"She was fierce and she was on the attack," he said. "The technical aspects of her program were sensational, but she skated with her heart and soul. I'm very proud of her."
As well he should be. She could crack the 200-point mark today, a level no woman has reached.
"It's important we don't get too hung up on being in the lead and the points," he said. "We have to go out and skate a solid long program.
"I want her to skate with the same spirit she did today."
As he spoke in a hallway not far from the ice, Boitano walked by. He's here coaching U.S. women's title holder Alissa Czisny, whose error-filled performance looked even worse compared with Kim's magic.
"She was great," Boitano said of Kim.
"Wasn't she good?" Orser said.
"Oh, my God," Boitano said, his enthusiasm genuine, able, now as then, to appreciate the merits of a wonderful rivalry that has reached its second generation.

금요일 월드 챔피언십에서 사람을 홀리는[매혹적인] 쇼트 프로그램을 연기해 스스로를 넘사벽으로 만든 이 한국의 십대는, 1988년 캘거리 올림픽에서 벌어진 “브라이언의 전투”의 캐나다쪽 출전자인 브라이언 오서에게 코치를 받고 있다. 그의 강적은 미국 챔피언 브라이언 보이타노였는데, 보이타노가 프리 스케이트에서 5 대 4로 심판 판정에 힘입어 캐나다의 빙상에서 금메달을 땄다.
오서와 보이타노가 월드 챔피언십을 주고받을 때 김연아는 태어나지도 않았었다. 그러나 오서가 그녀에게 그가 보이타노에게 진 시합들과 이긴 것들 그리고 종종 결정적인 차이를 만든 아주 작은 (점수)차에 대해 얘기해 줬다.

“그는 여러 해 전에 아주 훌륭한 선수였어요. 그는 정말로 제가 제 자신의 프로그램에만 집중할 수 있게 도와 줘요.”라고 (쇼트 경기가 열린) 금요일에 김연아는 말했다.
“그는 ‘브라이언의 전투’ 때문에 시합에서 제가 무얼 느끼는지 잘 알죠. 그리고 제가 지금 그걸 하고 있고요. 그러니까 그는 제게 아주 좋은[딱인] 코치라고 생각해요.”
오서는 오래 전의 라이벌 경쟁에 대해 그녀가 거명하는 걸 보고 웃었고, 그녀가 그의 코칭 실력을 칭찬하자 다시 웃었다.
“오, 좋아요. 저는 아직 일자리가 있는 거죠[안 짤린 거죠].”라고 그는 웃으며 말했다.

그녀는 유연하고 사랑스러운 스파이럴과 스핀으로 스테이플 센터의 빙상을 가로 지르며 돌아다니느라, 금요일에 거의 제대로 쉬지 못했다. 그녀는 트리플 플립의 도약에서 롱 에지 경고를 받았지만, 그녀가 받은 76.12점의 일부를 이 점프의 GOE 가산점으로 받았다.

“그녀는 맹렬했고 공격적이었죠. 그녀의 프로그램의 기술적인 면은 아주 센세이셔널한 것이었죠. 하지만 그녀는 마음과 영혼을 담아 스케이트를 탔어요. 저는 그녀가 아주 자랑스럽습니다.”라고 그는 말했다.
그는 그럴만하다. 그녀는 오늘, 그 어떤 여자 선수도 도달하지 못했던 200점을 돌파했다.
“선두에 섰다는 거나 그 점수에 너무 집착하지 않는 게 중요하다. 우리는 나가서 견고한 롱 프로그램을 스케이트 타야 한다.”라고 그는 말했다.
“저는 그녀가 오늘 했던 것과 똑같은 기백으로 스케이트를 타기를 바랍니다.”
그가 빙판에서 그리 멀지 않은 복도에서 말을 하고 있을 때, 보이타노가 옆을 지나갔다. 그는 미국 선수권 타이틀 보유자인 알리사 시즈니를 이곳에서 코치 중이다. 알리사 시즈니는 김연아의 마법과 비교해 훨씬 더 나빠 보이는 실수로 가득찬 연기를 보였다.

Every female figure skater in the United States who has Olympic aspirations and did not see Kim Yu-Na win the world championship Saturday night at Staples Center should be required to watch Kim's "Sheherazade" routine before taking to the ice again.
Not simply to remind them they are incredibly far from matching what the 18-year-old South Korean achieved and that they're unlikely to win a medal next February at the Vancouver Olympics.
That's undeniably true, though, after Rachael Flatt's earnest fifth-place finish and U.S. champion Alissa Czisny's 11th-place showing -- three places higher than she stood after her overscored short program.
No, every American woman and every American skater can learn something from Kim's seamless meshing of difficult jumps and intricate spins in a program that boosted her overall total to a record 207.71 points, the first woman to surpass 200 since this scoring system was adopted for the 2005 World Championships.
They should especially note the unruffled calm she displayed in recovering from a sloppy double salchow and finishing her program with supreme confidence.
They should study the way she expressed so much with her arms and carriage and face, creating a mood that entranced a nearly packed house.
The woman who never smiled on the ice until she left her home in 2006 to train in Toronto with Brian Orser couldn't stop grinning Saturday.
"I want to become a remembered skater," Kim said.
No one who saw her routine Saturday will forget it.
The mistake on the salchow, which was supposed to be a triple and was landed badly, was minor and forgettable.
What will linger is the sound of the crowd becoming hushed as she took off for her first element, a triple flip-triple toe loop combination jump, and its collective "oooh" of awe and delight as her blade crunched safely on the ice twice.
"I was very well prepared," Kim said. "While practicing, I have been confident and thought I was going to do well."
Not even she imagined she'd do this well. And consider this: She set that record even though she got no points for her final spin, which was declared invalid because it was not one of the required variations.
As she stood at center ice Saturday night she looked so small to be the object of so much affection, to have inspired a standing ovation, a flurry of flag waving and a torrent of stuffed animals thrown onto the ice in her honor.
But she earned every one of those tributes.
Kim finished more than 16 points ahead of the worthy runner-up, Joannie Rochette of Canada, and more than 17 ahead of 2007 world champ Miki Ando of Japan, who edged teammate Mao Asada for the bronze medal even though Asada landed a rare triple axel as part of her first combination jump.
"For tonight, of course, she skated so good there was no doubt," Rochette said. "And of course, she's a tough competitor."

그들은 특히 엉성한 더블 살코 후 냉정을 찾아 더없는 자신감으로 프로그램을 마칠 때 그녀가 보여준 흔들림 없는 침착함에 주목해야 한다.
그들은 그녀가 팔과 자세와 얼굴(표정)을 아주 많이 표현해서 거의 만석인 경기장을 완전히 매료시키는 분위기를 자아내는 방식을 연구해야 한다.
2006년 토론토에서 브라이언 오서와 함께 훈련하기 위해 그녀의 고향을 떠났을 때까지만 해도 전혀 웃지 않았던 이 여성은 토요일엔 환한 웃음을 멈추지 않았다.
“저는 (사람들의) 기억 속에 남는 스케이터가 되고 싶어요.”라고 김연아는 말했다.
토요일에 그녀의 연기를 본 사람이라면 그 누구도 잊지 못할 것이다.
원래 트리플로 예정됐으나 잘못 착지한 살코에서의 실수는 중요치 않은 잊어도 되는 것이었다.
(대신) 오래 남을 것은 그녀가 첫 번째 요소인 트리플 플립- 트리플 토 룹 컴비네이션 점프를 도약했을 때 조용해졌다가 그녀의 스케이트 날이 얼음 위를 안전하게 두 번 밟았을 때 집단적으로 경외심과 기쁨의 “우우”소리를 낸 것이다.
“저는 아주 제대로 준비를 했어요. 연습하는 동안, 확신이 들었고 그래서 잘 할 거라고 생각했어요.”라고 김연아는 말했다.
(그러나 그런) 그녀조차도 자신이 그렇게 잘 할 거라곤 상상하지 못했다. 그리고 이걸 고려해 보라: 그녀는, 필수 변형동작 중의 하나가 아니어서 무효로 처리되는 바람에, 마지막 스핀에서 점수를 받지 못했는데도 그런 기록을 세웠다.
