 Another competition, another world record for Yu-Na Kim at Trophee Eric Bompard

 

World champion Yu-Na Kim comes out on top in her latest head-to-head battle with Japanese rival Mao Asada. Kim did not just win Trophee Eric Bompard, she did it in spectacular fashion, becoming the first lady to have a total score of over 210 points and beating silver medalist Asada by over 36 points. Asada’s teammate, Yukari Nakano, took the bronze.

 

As if her world record performance at last season’s World Championships was not enough, Kim established two new world records with her free skate score of 133.95 and her total score of 210.03. With her performances in Paris, she continues to widen the gap between herself and the rest of the ladies in the world. But perhaps the more demoralizing fact for her opponents is that she produced these scores even after omitting her triple flip, a loss of 5.5 off her base value. But the other elements of her program were both clean and superbly executed, earning her almost all positive grades of execution (GOE).

 

After singling her triple axel attempt in the short program, Asada hit her first attempt in the free skate, showing one of the most effortless triple axels in the world. But few errors crept in thereafter, as she underrotated her second triple axel and fell on her double axel later in the program. Those mistakes were compounded by a series of downgraded jumps in the middle of the program, which dropped her base value significantly. But her score of 115.03 is still a solid score, and she will be looking to clean up the deductions during the season.

Bronze medalist Nakano had three clean triple jumps but received two downgrades due to underrotation. Her 106.06 score was an improvement over her effort at the Japan Open two weeks ago. She dislocated her shoulder during a fall on her triple axel at the Japan Open, and she opted to not attempt it in Paris.

 

U.S. bronze medalist Caroline Zhang finished fourth overall after receiving downgrades on both her triple salchow and her second triple loop, which lowered her base value by over 6.5 points. 2008 U.S. junior champion Alexe Gilles landed four triples in the free skate in her debut in senior international competition and finished right behind Zhang. Italy’s Carolina Kostner continued to struggle with her jumps and finished in 6^th place.

월드 챔피언인 김연아 선수가 최근까지 막상막하였던 라이벌, 일본의 아사다 마오선수를 저만치 따돌리고 우승을 거머쥐었다. 단순히 1위를 했다는 게 중요한게 아니다. 김연아 선수는 경이적인 연기를 선보이며 210점이 넘는 세계 신기록을 보유한 첫 여자 스케이터로 등극했으며, 이는 2위를 한 아사다 마오 선수를 무려 36점 차이로 눌러버렸다는 의미이다. 아사다와 같은 일본 출신의 유카리 나카노 선수는 동메달을 차지했다.   

 

 

작년 월드 챔피언쉽에서 달성한 세계 신기록이 성에 차지 않았다는 듯이, 김연아 선수는 오늘 경기에서만 두가지 새로운 세계 신기록을 달성했다. 프리스케이팅에서의 133.95점과 쇼트 프리를 합친 총점에서의 210.03점이 바로 그것이다. 이번 파리에서의 경기(TEB)도 김연아 선수에게는 그저 나머지 여자 싱글 선수들과의 실력차이를 계속해서 넓혀가는 과정일 뿐인 듯 싶다. 그러나 트리플 플립 (기본점수 5.5점) 을 아예 뛰지 않고도 이런 결과를 만들어냈다는 사실은 상대 선수들로 하여금 싸울 의지조차 사라지게 만들 수 밖에 없지 않겠는가? 또한 탄성에 가까운 GOE 점수를 획득하면서 트리플 플립을 제외한 다른 프로그램 구성요소들은 완벽하면서 당당한 세련됨 그 자체였다는 사실을 보여주었다.

 

 

한편 아사다 마오 선수는 쇼트 프로그램 도입부에서 싱글 처리했던 트리플 악셀을 이번 프리 경기에서 아주 쉽게 해내는 모습을 보여주었다. 그러나 문제는 그 직후 드러났다. 그녀는 두번째 트리플 악셀은 회전 부족이었고, 프로그램 후반부의 더블 악셀에서는 넘어지고 말았다. 이러한 실수들은 프로그램 중반부에 일련의 다운그레이드 된 점프들로 나타나게 되었으며, 기본 점수를 무참히도 떨어뜨리고 말았다. 그래도 115.03은 꽤 괜찮은 점수임에 분명하고 시즌이 계속되면서 감점요소를 점점 줄여나가기를 기도해본다.

 

 

동...메... (아... 더이상 하고싶지 않지만 그냥 이를 악물고 하겠음.. ㅋㅋ)  동메달을 목에 건 나카노 선수는 세번의 깔끔한 3회전 점프들을 보여줬지만, 회전수 부족에 의한 감점은 막을 수 없는 결과였다. 그녀의 점수인 106.6점은 지난 재팬 오픈때보다 더 높은 점수이다. 나카노 선수는 2주전 대회중 트리플 악셀을 시도하다 넘어져 어깨 탈골 부상을 입은 후 이번 대회에서는 아예 시도하지 않기로 결정했엇다.

 

 

미국 동메달리스트인 캐롤리나 장은 트리플 살코와 두번째 트리플 룹에서 합 6.5점 정도의 감점을 받으며, 전체 순위 4위로 대회를 마감했다. 2008년 미국 주니어 챔피언인 Alexe Gilles 선수는 국제 시니어 데뷔 무대인 이번 대회 프리 경기에서 4개의 3회전 점프를 성공하며 캐롤리나 장 선수에 이어 5위로 마감했다. 이탈리아의 캐롤리나 코스트너 선수는 여전히 점프난조를 보이며 6위로 마감했다.

 Kim, Virtue and Moir in commanding lead at Trophee Eric Bompard

There is little doubt as to who was best in the ladies and ice dance events at Trophee Eric Bompard, the first of six Grand Prix competitions that qualify skaters to December’s Grand Prix Final. World Champion Yu-Na Kim and World bronze medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are blowing away their competition thus far, taking huge leads into the free skate and free dance tomorrow.

LADIES
Kim, one of the frontrunners for the ladies’ Olympic gold medal in Vancouver, picked up right where she left off last season at the World Championships. Her short program, skated to a James Bond medley, scored at 76.08 nearly as high as she scored at the 2009 Worlds, which was both her personal best and the best ladies’ short program score ever attained. Her triple lutz-triple toe combination, which she has not competed in competition since 2005, was solid, as were the rest of the elements. With this performance, Kim leads by over 16 points over the rest of the field.

여자 싱글

밴쿠버에서 열릴 동계올림픽 여자 싱글 스케이트 부문의 가장 강력한 우승 후모로 점쳐지고 있는 김연아 선수는 지난 시즌 월드 챔피언쉽에서 보여주었던 그 모습 바로 그대로 우리 곁으로 돌아왔다. 그녀는 제임스 본드 메들리에 맞춰 연기를 펼친 쇼트 프로그램에서 76.08이라는 점수를 획득했으며, 이는 지난 월드에서 세웠었던 쇼트 세계 신기록이자 그녀의 퍼스널 베스트 점수에 거의 육박하는 점수이다.  2005년 이후 거의 볼 수 없었던 트리플 럿츠 - 트리플 토 컴비네이션 점프를 선보인 것을 비롯한 다른 모든 프로그램 구성요소들이 완벽하게 자리잡은 모습이었다. 쇼트 경기 이후 김연아 선수와 2위 선수와의 점수차이는 약 16점 이상!

Japan’s Yukari Nakano skated a clean but less difficult program, putting her in second place. Kim’s main rival during the past few seasons, 2007 World Champion Mao Asada, took a risk by adding a triple axel combination in the short program. But she singled her axel attempt, thereby losing points in her base value and incurring mandatory -3 grade of execution (GOE) scores. 

Asada’s mistake put her in third place after the short, just ahead of the two American skaters, Caroline Zhang and Alexe Gilles. It is of note that both Zhang and Gilles skated clean programs, but Asada is ahead by virtue of her much higher Program Component Scores (PCS).  Even though Kim has a huge lead, second through fifth are separated by only 2.38 points, so there is the potential for quite a bit of a shake up in the standings after tomorrow's free skate. 

Italy’s Carolina Kostner, who is both unpredictable and inconsistent, fell on her opening combination and doubled her solo triple jump, leaving her in 7^th place.
