Yu-Na's relationship with her coach was doomed when it became clear to her that Brian Orser was using the rivalry with her long time Japanese competitor to manipulate the outcome of her very difficult career decision.

3월에 나왔던 이 두 기사가 자꾸 눈에 밟힌다. 허쉬한테 내가 썼던 메일의 문맥에서 보면 난 이 내용들이 매우 중요하다고 생각해.
올림픽 폐회식 직전에서조차 연아와 연아어머님한테 알리지도 않고 오서는 기자에게 연아가 해야할 목표에 대해 흘리지.
"난 그녀가 트악하는걸 보고싶다"
"2014년 올림픽에서 그녀가 다시 한번 금메달 따는걸 원한다"
"먼저 그녀는 월드에서 타이틀을 방어할 필요가 있다. 그리고 휴식후 다음시즌을 준비해야 한다"

우린 연아가 2014년 올림픽을 위해 4년 동안 더 연습한다는건 생각만해도 끔찍한 일이라고 이야기한 걸 봐왔지. 오서 코치와 연아가 같은 생각을 하고 있지 않다는 건 여기서 이미 명확한 거야. 이것이 오서가 그녀의 진로에 있어서 영향을 미치려고 했다는 유일한 사례라면 난 아마 파급력에 대해 의심을 했을꺼야.

These two articles bothered me back in March when I first saw them. In
context with what I wrote to Hersh, I think these stories become
significant.
Even before the closing ceremonies in Vancouver and without consulting with
Yu-Na or her mother Brian Orser tells reporters the goals HE has for Yu-Na:
€ "I really want to see her do a triple axel"
€ "The coach also wants Kim to repeat her success at the 2014 Winter
Olympics in Sochi, Russia."
€ "First, she needs to defend her title at the world championships. She
should then prepare for next season after taking a rest."
Here is the story dated March 2, 2010 as printed in "Dong-A Ilbo"

The Dong-A Ilbo yesterday talked to the coach of Olympic figure skating gold
medalist Kim Yu-na, Brian Orser, two hours before the closing ceremony of
the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Kim broke her own world record with a combined 228.56 points in the women¹s
figure skating competition in Vancouver. Nevertheless, Orser seems to want
more. ³If she wants to raise her score, she needs a triple axel. Though she
is an Olympic champion now, she has room for further improvement,² he said.
He also mentioned the conditions needed for doing a triple axel. ³If she¹s
free from any pain in her ankles, knees and hips, she can practice with
time. I really want to see her do a triple axel.²
Kim did not attempt a triple axel either in practice or in competition this
season. ³For now, the triple jump is the most important technique, but I
believe Yu-na could easily learn the triple axel,² Orser said.
The coach also wants Kim to repeat her success at the 2014 Winter Olympics
in Sochi, Russia. ³First, she needs to defend her title at the world
championships. She should then prepare for next season after taking a rest.
I¹m not sure what¹s in for Yu-na after that,² he said.
³I believe she will face no issues with physical resilience until 2014, when
she¹ll be just 24 years old. Everything will depend on how she sees
herself.²

Is Orser implying she needs a triple axel to be as good as Mao Asada - the
skater who did 3 triple axels at the Olympics and got demolished by Kim's
performance in Vancouver?
Clearly, as we say in English, Brian is off the reservation here. No way
should he be discussing this before telling Yu-Na.
How do I know it was not discussed with Yu-Na?
Read how Brian tried to backtrack a little when it was brought up at Yu-Na's
first News Conference in Korea after the Winter Games where Yu-Na gets
blindsided by this question on Orser's "secret triple axel plan".

By itself, this probably shouldn't be that big a deal but it is very clear
what Brian Orser wants from his newly crowned Olympic Champion.
We all saw where she said the thought of working another 4 years to compete
in Sochi was "Horrendous". Clearly coach and athlete are not on the same
page here. If this was the only example of Brian trying to influence her
career decision, I doubt it would have a lot of impact. Do I think this
shows more bad judgment on Brian's part? For sure! And yes, I see it as
another nail in the team's coffin?
Brian was never an Olympic Champion and he stayed hungry for it for a long
time. He did not understand the feelings of an Olympic Champion when there
are no new mountains to climb.
I am sure the casual fan does not know how much a skater must sacrifice to
get close to Olympic Gold. It is not really a team sport. You are alone out
there on those thin blades in front of the judges and the crowd. Even
practice are usually by yourself working with coach or choreographer. A
lonely grueling sport.
To win Olympic gold you have to give up practically everything else but
skating. And why should Yu-Na do this again for another 4 years risking
permanent injury? To win an Olympic Gold Medal and prove she is the best in
the world again on a future February day in 2014? No Woman Olympic Champion
since Katarina Witt in the 1980's has even tried and she skated for East
Germany which was that era's N Korea. Kim has nothing to prove. She should
entertain us, thrill us with shows and begin to live a life of her own
choosing.
